How to Optimize Content for Search Engines
The internet is filled with content on various topics and writing styles. However SEO-optimized content will have better visibility and experience than other content.
Statistics show that around 68% of all online experiences start with a simple search.
That's why it's important to maintain content visibility in search engines for all lines of business. And for that to happen, you can start by optimizing content efficiently. Only then does it have a chance to appear in the top search results on search engines like Google?
So, how to effectively optimize your content to get it indexed properly and appear in organic searches?
1. Conduct Keyword Research
The first thing you need to do is determine keywords. Keywords are very important for Google's search engine to index your content and appear in search results.
There are two main types of keywords, namely:
- High volume keywords
- Keywords with a long number of words (3-5 words) or Long Tail Keywords
High-volume keywords do have a large audience opportunity, but these types of keywords are less specific.
For example, if people search for the keyword "repairing a laptop", the search results may show up "repairing a laptop because it's hot", "repairing a laptop that suddenly died", etc.
So if these types of keywords are used to sell products, they will be less effective.
Meanwhile, Long Tail Keywords usually have more measurable targets. For example, “best LED computer screen 2023”. So the search results will contain information about good computer LEDs in 2023.
Because the target and intent are clear for a product, this makes promotion easier.
So when doing keyword research, you have to know exactly what the purpose of the content you are creating is. So that you don't make a mistake in determining the keywords to use.
Now, after doing keyword research, you need to know how to use those keywords correctly. In one article's content, keywords must have ideal proportions. The technical language is keyword density.
Normally one article has a keyword density of around 1-2% of the total words.
2. Create Interesting and High-Quality Content
After determining the right keywords, the next focus is on the content production part. Create interesting and quality content.
Don't make the content the same as content from other sites. Content must have original characteristics.
What is quality content?
There are certain characteristics of high-quality content, such as:
- Focus on information
- Don't be wordy or use excessive words
- It's not just theoretical
- Must be unique, original
- Easy to read and understand
- The article flows as it is read
This means that the content created must have quite a lot of criteria to gain the reader's trust. Apart from that, readers can also get action after reading it. Don't duplicate article content from other sources.
Therefore, it is very important to check articles for plagiarism before posting them. After that, the writer can paraphrase the duplicate text.
Then, to make it easier to read, it is important to ensure that the article is structured using simple, non-technical words.
Also, it is important to ensure that sentences are around 10-15 words and paragraphs do not exceed 3-4 lines.
3. Create Attractive Meta Tags
Meta tags are very important for visibility in search engines. Technically, meta tags are information given to crawlers so that article information data can appear in search engines clearly.
Like the Title meta tag and the Description meta tag, both keywords must be inserted but wrapped in sentences that are also easy to attract readers.
So meta tags are not only good for search engines but also for readers.
That's why it's very important for you as a writer to use the right meta-tag creation techniques. Sometimes many meta tags are created haphazardly, even though if they are created optimally the results will be good in search results.
4. Content Structuring with On-Page SEO Techniques
Arranging content so that it is optimal for search engines must use On-Page SEO techniques. This technique will maximize your content according to SEO guidelines.
This will have the opportunity to increase ranking in search results.
Three main things are important in On-Page SEO:
- Use appropriate headers and headlines.
- Using the right keywords and their density (see point one for more info).
- And perfect other important things.
The first thing is about a structure that complies with on-page SEO guidelines. That's why you should use H1, H2, and so on headings in your content. But what is more important is that you use keywords in the H1 and H2. Plus, breaking up your content like that will also make it easier to read.
Then, you need to optimize the URL structure of your website/blog. Every blog you post should have a slug (permalink) indicating the keywords and intent of the article—this is very important because it helps search engine crawler robots find relevant content.
Lastly, you must optimize internal links and anchor text. Internal linking is when your content links text to other blog posts/pages on your website, thereby increasing your domain ranking. Meanwhile, anchor text is the main keyword where you link back relevant links.
This is just the basic and most basic definition of on-page SEO elements and techniques.
